SEATTLE, Wash. - The University of Utah softball team defeated the Western Illinois Westerwinds, 1-0 in eight innings on Thurs., May 18, at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Seattle, Wash. Utah moves to 40-21 overall. The Westerwinds drop to 46-15 overall.
With each team held scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning, it was a battle of the pitchers in the first game of regional play. Junior Kristin Arbogast went the distance, pitching eight innings, giving up only four hits, zero runs five walks and struck out five. Arbogast improves to 38-17 overall. Freshman Niki Hayhurst had the game winning hit for the Utes with a shot up the middle to score rightfielder Molly McLean. Hayhurst went 2-for-4 with an RBI and teammate Lyndsey Trevis went 2-for-4 in the game. As a team, Utah had eight hits in 30 at bats with one run and one RBI.
For the Westerwinds, Kendra DeRosa was a perfect 1-for-1 with a walk. Teammates Dani Hofmann and Jennifer Tyrrell each went 1-for-2. Holly Killion took the loss for Western Illinois, pitching 7.2 innings, giving up eight hits, one run, one walk and struck out seven. Killion moves to 29-5 overall.
"We knew their pitcher (Holly Killion) was pretty good going into the game. It has been a while since we've seen a rise ball that effective. They have a good team and I can see why they have the record they have. I'm proud of the way our kids stayed calm and confident, it was a team effort today," said Utah Head Coach Mona Stevens.
"That was a great game. We had some scoring opportunities, and we put ourselves in a position to win the game early. We had great discipline at the plate. We didn't swing at bad pitches, and worked the count in our favor. It's frustrating for hitters when you don't come through in scoring opportunities," said Western Illinois Head Coach Kathy Veroni.
