Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's tennis team (0-1) opened the 2001 season with a 7-0 loss to No. 16 Northwestern (3-0).
Northwestern earned a team point early by sweeping doubles play. Utah competed in the first sets of most of the singles matches, however, the Wildcats adjusted to dominate the second sets, and put Utah away in straight sets in five of six matches.
Sophomore Frida Kareld was the lone three-set match, dropping a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 decision to Jessica Rush at No. 6.
"We had opportunities in the first sets," said Head Coach John Tsumas. "Four of our players had chances early on. We didn't get some big game points, and Northwestern got confidence off of that. We needed to build off how we won games in the first set."
