The University of Utah's alpine ski team turned heads in Squaw Valley, Calif. on Sunday, as they propelled the Utes to a first place finish in the University of Nevada Invitational.
The men's team thrived on the finishes of Scott Woodland, Jernej Bukovec, and Jed Schuetze over the weekend. Woodland finished second in Saturday's giant slalom and followed it up with a second place finish in the slalom event on Sunday. Bukovec, who placed third in day one, posted another top-five performance with a fourth place finish in the slalom. Schuetze gave the team two solid eighth-place finishes. Utah's 66 points in the slalom event distanced them from Colorado, who scored 49.5 for second place in the event.
Utah's women, who tied for third in Saturday's slalom event, took control of day two's giant slalom, posting top results with 59 points followed by Alaska-Anchorage with 53.5 and Colorado with 50.5. Utah's April Mancuso led the Utes with a second place showing in the GS. Annik Boulva, who placed eighth in the slalom, finished in sixth, and Petra Svet finished eighth, after an impressive second place finish in the slalom on Saturday. Danielle Bird finished 14th in the GS, giving the fourth-best finish to the Utes and not being scored.
The nordic team, who wrapped up their events at the Nevada invite last weekend, put Utah in a second place position heading into the alpine events. Utah's impressive showing this weekend, moved them to the top.
