LAS VEGAS - No. 25 ranked Utah (2-5-0) split games on the opening day of the UNLV Softball Classic. The Utes dropped their first game of the tourney, 4-0 to the California (Berkeley) Bears. Utah defeated the Florida International Golden Panthers, 5-2 in the late game on Fri., Feb. 16.
Against Florida International, junior Lyndsey Trevis went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore Niki Hayhurst went 1-for-4 with and RBI and teammates Amberly Jeppson and Molly McLean went 1-for-4 with two runs each. Freshman Heather Bowlin (1-1) recorded her first victory of the season. Bowlin pitched four innings, giving up three hits, one earned run and struck out three.
Against Cal, Utah manufactured only three hits, scored no runs and committed one error. Senior Kristin Arbogast (1-4) recorded the loss for the Utes. Arbogast pitched seven innings, giving up eight hits, one earned run and struck out three. Molly McLean, Melissa Stahnke and Angie Kenney each had one hit in the game.
UP NEXT:
The Utes face Portland State at 11:30 a.m. and Central Michigan at 4:30 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 17. Utah will take on No. 16 ranked Oregon State at 11:30 a.m. on Sun., Feb. 18. On Feb. 23-25, the Utes will compete in the Santa Barbara Tournament .
