HANCOCK, VT. - HANCOCK, VT. - The University of Utah ski team finished fourth overall at the NCAA Skiing Championships which wrapped up Saturday, Mar. 10. Heading into the final slalom events, Utah held onto second place, and despite two champion performances by Jernej Bukovec and Petra Svet, fell to fourth on the final day of competition.
Bukovec, who was an NCAA runner-up last season, was the winner of the 2001 men's slalom event. Bukovec, a sophomore, provided the Utes with consistently good results all season on his way to becoming the national champion. He also tied for ninth in the men's giant slalom event.
Svet earned her first podium finish earlier this season and went on her way to land seven top-10 and five top-5 finishes this year. In only her second year as a Ute, she placed 12th in the women's giant slalom, and first in the slalom.
Both skiers are natives of Ljbubjana, Slovenia. Both skied for Slovenia's Nation "C" Team from 1994-99.
The Utes placed three skiers in the top-10 of the men's slalom, with Bukovec in first, Jed Schuetze in eighth, and Scott Woodland in ninth. Svet led the women with her win, followed by Annik Boulva in 27th, and April Mancuso in 29th.
The University of Denver won the event for the second straight year, followed by Vermont, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico.
