Tampa, Fla. - The University of Utah softball team (9-10-0) continues its' 2001 campaign at the Southern Florida Speedline Tournament, Mar. 8-11, in Tampa, Fla. The Utes defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 3-2 in the early game and lost, 3-0 to the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Fri., Mar. 9.
Against the Bulldogs, senior Amberly Jeppson went 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base. Teammate Lyndsey Trevis went 1-for-2 with a double, one RBI and a walk. Junior Molly McLean went 1-for-3 with one run and a double. Senior Kristin Arbogast recorded the win for Utah after pitching seven innings and giving up one earned run, four hits, two walks and struck out nine. As a team, the Utes went just 5-for-22, but held on for the win and recorded three runs and three RBI in the game.
Utah managed only three hits in 23 at bats as the Texas Tech Red Raiders went on to hold the Utes scoreless in the late game. Jeppson went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and junior Angie Kenney tallied Utah's other hit in the game. Arbogast took the loss for the Utes, she move to 7-6 overall. Arbogast pitched six innings and gave up eight hits, zero earned runs, one walk and struck out four in 27 batters faced.
UP NEXT: On Sat., Mar. 10, Utah will play Georgia Southern at 10:00 a.m., Temple at 12:00 p.m. and Michigan State at 2:00 p.m. The Utes will begin the single elimination part of the tourney on Sun., Mar. 11. On Mar. 16-18, Utah plays in the Florida State Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. On Mar. 23 and 24, the Utes will take on the nationally prominent Arizona Wildcats in a non-conference match-up in Tucson, Ariz. Both games are set for 7:00 p.m. Utah will host in-state rival Utah State on Mar. 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Ute Field. On Fri., Mar. 30, the Utes open MWC play at New Mexico at 1:00 p.m.
