The University of Utah softball team opened Mountain West Conference play on the road with a win and a tie over the New Mexico Lobos. The Utes (19-15-1) ended a seven-game win streak for the Lobos (27-14-1) by shutting them down 14-5 in the first game and tying the second game at 5-5, on Fri., Mar. 30 in Albuquerque, N.M.
In the first game, Melissa Stahnke was an impressive 3-for-5 with two home runs, two runs and four RBI. Junior Lyndsey Trevis went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and four RBI. Senior Kristin Arbogast recorded the win for Utah after pitching seven innings and giving up three earned runs, nine hits, five walks and struck out three. She improves to 13-10 overall. As a team, the Utes went 15-for-35, and recorded 14 runs and 14 RBI in the game.
In the late game, Utah managed eight hits in 34 at bats as the game was called at a 5-5 tie due to darkness. Stahnke hit a three run homer in the first inning. Sophomore Niki Hayhurst went 1-for-4 with two RBI in the game. Arbogast pitched nine innings and gave up 10 hits, five earned runs, three walks and struck out four in 39 batters faced.
UP NEXT: Utah heads to Fort Collins, Colo., for a twinbill with the Colorado State Rams (3-21-0) on Apr. 1 at 12:00 p.m. On Tues., Apr. 3, Utah hosts Southern Utah at 1:30 p.m. The Utes will take on the San Diego State Aztecs on Fri., Apr. 6 at 1:00 p.m. (DH) in San Diego, Calif. On Sun., Apr. 8, Utah travels to UNLV for a doubleheader match-up at 12:00 p.m.
