This Week:
The University of Utah women's tennis team (2-7, 1-0 MWC) returns to the Eccles Tennis Center after a six-match road stint, to take on in-state rival Utah State (2-3), Thurs., March 8 at 5 p.m.
About the Utes:
Utah snapped a six-match losing skid by crushing No. 58 UC-Irvine, 5-2, Feb. 26.
Utah opened the match by crushing the Anteaters to earn the doubles point, and never looked back. Heidi Thomas and Frida Kareld continued their doubles success, beating Amy Tranckino and Natalie Exon at No. 2, 8-2. The point was awarded after Linn Ronnberg and Sheri Esrock put on an 8-2 shellacking of Nickole Kabe and Antonella Castro at No. 3.
Cassie Kasteler went three-sets, dominating the third at No. 2 singles, in the closest match Utah would play on the afternoon. She upended Exon, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0. Esrock won in straight sets at No. 4 over Tranckino, 6-4, 7-6. Kareld followed suit with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Castro. Thomas made quick work of Mindy Gondrez at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.
Thomas Award:
Senior Heidi Thomas was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Thomas lost only one match, in doubles, against three ranked opponents Feb. 23-26. The Fruit Heights, Utah, native saw a loss against Washington State at No. 2 in doubles play 9-8, Feb. 23. She would not lose again, retiring Washington's Colleen Gray at No. 5 (2-6, 7-6 (6)) and sweeping UC Irvine's Mindy Gondrez in the No. 6 position 6-2, 6-0. Doubled with teammate Frida Kareld, the Utes defeated duos from Washington 9-8 and UC Irvine 8-2. The Utes fell to No. 54 Washington State, 0-6, and No. 17 Washington, 2-5, Feb. 25 before defeating No. 58 UC Irvine, 5-2, on Feb. 26.
About The Aggies:
Utah State is 2-3, losing last, 7-0, to Weber State. Junior Sarah Lowe is 2-3 at the No. 1 singles position. She carries a 7-5 overall record. It will be their first match in three weeks.
Looking Ahead:
Utah resumes MWC play in Albuquerque, NM., March 23 and 24 against Air Force and New Mexico, at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
