Cedar City, Utah - The Utes defeated the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 5-2 in nine innings and 9-0 in six innings, on Tues., Apr. 17, in Cedar City, Utah. Utah improves 28-17-1 on the season, 5-2-1 in MWC play. Southern Utah falls to 21-28 overall.
Utah broke the game open in the ninth inning, scoring three runs to seal the win over the Thunderbirds. For the Utes, junior Angie Kenney went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Michele Larsen went 2-for-4 with a double, one run and one RBI, while Christa Pfeninger had one hit, one run and one RBI. Kristin Arbogast tallied the win for Utah. Arbogast pitched nine innings, giving up six hits, one earned run, four walks and struck out 10 in 35 batters faced. She has a 20-12 overall record. As a team, the Utes went 10-for-33, with five runs and five RBI.
For the Thunderbirds, Emily Cederholm notched one hit and one RBI. Mandy Flint (12-14) took the loss for Southern Utah.
In game two, Utah combined for eight hits in 26 at bats, along with nine runs and seven RBI. Molly McLean tallied one hit, one run and two RBI. Freshman Melissa Stahnke went 2-for-3 with a double, one run and one RBI, while teammate Niki Hayhurst racked up her 11th home run of the season. Freshman Heather Bowlin posted the win after pitching six innings for her third shut-out of the season. Bowlin gave up five hits, zero earned runs, three walks and struck out one in the game. She improves to 8-5 overall.
Lacey Leprey took the loss for Southern Utah. She drops to 1-2 overall.
UP NEXT: The Utes are back in action at home on Fri., Apr. 20, hosting Colorado State at 1:30 p.m. (DH). On Sat., Apr. 21, Utah will take on the New Mexico Lobos in a twinbill at 12:00 p.m. The Utes will face the UNLV Rebels on Fri., Apr. 27 at 1:30 p.m. (DH) and the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Apr. 28 at 12:00 (DH) at Ute Field.
