Colorado Springs, Colo. - Utah shortstop Melissa Stahnke is the Mountain West Conference Softball Player of the Week. This is the second player of the week honor for Stahnke this season.
Stahnke, a freshman from Ridgefield, Wash. (Ridgefield HS), hit .353 (6-for-17) with nine RBI, six runs scored, three home runs, and a double in six games last week. The Utes swept Southern Utah (5-2, 9-0) and Colorado State (5-1, 9-1), while splitting with New Mexico (1-2, 9-1). Stahnke went 2-for-7 with a double and an RBI in the two games vs. Southern Utah, while batting .500 (2-for-4) with three RBI and a home run in the Colorado State series. Stahnke concluded the week going 2-for-6 at the plate vs. New Mexico with both hits resulting in home runs and five RBI. The two round-trippers vs. the Lobos helped Stahnke set a new Utah single-season home run record with 19 on the year.
UP NEXT: The Utes will face the UNLV Rebels on Fri., Apr. 27 at 1:30 p.m. (DH) and the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Apr. 28 at 12:00 (DH) at Ute Field. Utah will face in-state rival Brigham Young on Fri., May 4, at 2:00 p.m. (DH) in Salt Lake City, and on May 5th, the Utes will play BYU at 12:00 p.m. (DH) in Provo, Utah. Utah will vie for its second-consecutive MWC Tournament Championship on May 10-12, in Albuquerque, N.M.
