Albuquerque, N.M. - No. 3-seed San Diego State University pitcher Sandra Durazo notched her second complete game, one-hitter of the day, leading the Aztecs to a 9-1 victory over the second-seeded University of Utah in the second round of the Mountain West Conference softball tournament Thursday afternoon at Lobo Field. SDSU tied a school record with 37 wins this season and advances to the third round of the tournament where it will play a yet to be determined opponent on Friday at 2 p.m. Utah lost its fourth straight game and will face Colorado State University on Friday at 11:30 a.m. in an elimination game.
Durazo pitched 5 1/3 innings without allowing a hit against one of the conference's best offensive teams as the Aztecs built a 6-0 lead. Utah third baseman Lyndsey Trevis broke up the no-hitter when she hit her 12th homerun of the season, a towering shot to left field. The homerun snapped Durazo's streak of 29 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run. She allowed one hit, one run, walked a batter and struck out seven in seven innings. With her 26th win of the season, Durazo broke her own school record of 25 set last year.
"Durazo's just tearing it up," said Utah head coach Mona Stevens. "She's the pitcher of the year in the conference and she pitched two one-hitters in one day. She's done a great job."
San Diego State got on the board in the second inning, scoring a pair of runs off Utah starter Kristin Arbogast. With Janna Kovensky on third and Tashie Aguinaga on second, designated player Kristina Kirk reached second on an error, scoring Kovensky. Two batters later, she drove in Aguinaga on a fielder's choice. The Aztecs struck again in the third inning, scoring two more runs on singles by Kellie Nordhagen, Aguinaga and Sarah Hershman. SDSU notched a run in the fifth and sixth innings, then tallied three in the top of the seventh inning to complete the scoring.
Hershman was two for three in the game and led the Aztecs with four RBI's. Aguinaga finished two-for-four and scored three runs. Arbogast pitched five innings for the Utes, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and striking out two.
