No. 2 seed Utah used a four-run sixth inning to defeat Colorado State, 4-1, in an elimination game of the Mountain West Conference Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Lobo Field. Utah snapped a four-game losing streak, improved to 36-24-1 on the season, and advanced to the third round of the tournament. The Utes will face top seeded BYU this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. (MDT). With their second loss of the tournament, CSU was eliminated and finished the season with a 10-37 record.
After being held to just one hit through five innings, the Utes exploded for four hits and four runs in the top of the sixth. Utah center fielder Molly McLean drew a walk and stole second to get the rally started. The next batter, left fielder Amberly Jeppson, singled past a diving CSU first baseman Jennie Orozco to score McLean and tie the game at one. After third basemen Lyndsey Trevis, who homered on Thursday, followed with a double to left field, Jeppson scored on shortstop Melissa Stahnke's sacrafice bunt. Three batters later, designated player Angie Kenney plated Trevis on a fielder's choice, before right fielder Masie Ota slapped a single up the middle to score first baseman Niki Hayhurst and give the Utes a 4-1 lead.
In the third inning, Colorado State loaded the bases with no outs against Utah starting pitcher Heather Bowlin, but could only muster a single run. Center fielder Kai Stone led off the inning with a single, shortstop Holly Schmillen followed with a walk and designated player Katie Koch reached on an error by Trevis to load the bases. Stone was forced out at home when second baseman Amanda Kocis ground into a fielder's choice, before Orozco scored Schmillen on another fielder's choice. With runners on second and third, third baseman Angie Kitchen flied to center to end the threat.
"Before this game started, our kids knew we were going to have a battle," said Utah head coach Mona Stevens. "They felt like they really needed to do a good job of pulling together. We decided that no matter what happened, if we had an error or weren't hitting, that we had to come together to win this thing."
McLean scored a run and stole two bases for the Utes, while Stone finished two for three for the Rams. Bowlin allowed no earned runs and just three hits in seven innings for Utah, while CSU starting pitcher Kyla Kiester gave up four runs on five hits in seven innings.
