BOZEMAN, Mont. - The University of Utah ski team wrapped up competition at the Montana State Invitational on Thursday with a second place finish. In the opening event of the season, the Utes trailed Denver in the overall standings by 45 points.
In Wednesday's cross-country classic competition, freshman Sara Svendsen led the women's team with a fourth place finish. Jorunn Oye and Anna Sprague followed in eighth and 10th place, respectively.
Petter Svendsen and Ryan Quinn earned top-ten finishes in the men's, placing fifth and eighth. In Thursday's free-technique competition, Petter added another fifth place finish, followed by Quinn in seventh and Zack Simons in ninth.
In the women's free-technique, Sara was the top finisher for the Utes, placing fifth. Oye followed in ninth and Jaana Ketunnen placed 11th. Denise Whitten and Anna Sprague placed 12th and 13th.
Denver's top-notch performance in the cross country events led it to victory. Utah placed second, followed by Nevada in third, Colorado in fourth, New Mexico in fifth, Alaska-Anchorage in sixth, Western State in seventh, Montana State in eighth and Whitman in ninth.
The Utes will continue competition by traveling to the Nevada-Reno Invitational on Jan. 13-14. The giant slalom and the free-technique events will take place on Sunday and the slalom and classic events will wrap up the invite on Monday.
