RENO, Nev. - The University of Utah ski team survived a tough opening day of competition at the University of Nevada Invitational on Sunday. After wrapping up the classical and slalom events, the Utes perch in third place behind Denver and Colorado. The Invite is the second event of the season for the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association.
The women's cross country team delivered solid results for the Utes, led by Jorunn Oye and Sara Svendsen, who skied to second and third place finishes in the classical event. Jaana Kettunen added a 15th place finish.
Petter Svendsen led the way for Utah in the men's classical with a fifth place finish. Zack Simons finished in tenth and Ryan Quinn gave Utah its third score with a 14th place performance.
In the men's slalom, Pierre Olsson finished in second place overall behind a competitor from a non-RMISA school, to earn first place points for the Utes. Josh Whitham was the next highest finisher for Utah in 19th, followed by Kristian Guay in 24th.
Reigning NCAA women's slalom champion, Petra Svet led the women's team with a third place finish. Christina Babilis earned a top-ten finish, placing ninth, followed by April Mancuso in 18th.
After finishing in second at last week's Montana State Invitational, the Utes are hoping to gain ground on the leaders. Utah trails Denver by 12 points and Colorado by 11. The giant slalom and the cross country free technique events will wrap up competition on Monday.
