SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's swimming team fell to the Colorado State Rams on Saturday by a score of 122-121. Utah drops to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference.
In a well fought effort by both teams, Utah took a 115-111 lead into the final and deciding event. Courtney McKinney, Rebecca Gerber, Neringa Statkeviciute and Melissa Young competed in the 200 free relay for the Utes, but came up just 32-hundredths of a second short of Colorado State's Lyndsey Carlaw, Kristen Knudson, Katie Peck and Kelly Sullivan.
Overall Utah took top honors in eight of the 13 events. Kristen Kaiser won the 1000 free (10:37.53), almost five seconds ahead of the next competitor, and the 500 free (5:12.66). Senior Courtney McKinney, in her final home meet, finished first in the 200 IM by setting a Utah school record with a time of 2:07.46. Neringa Statkeviciute finished first in the 50 free (24.25) and the 100 free (51.60). The Utes dominated the 200 free with Loren Sweny finishing first (1:54.88), Renee Dyer took second (1:55.34) and Kaiser finished third (1:55.36), right after winning the 1000 free.
"It was a great meet," said head coach Mike Litzinger. "Colorado State was a team which scored significantly higher than us in the conference championships last year. We did everything we could to win this meet, but we just came up a little short."
