THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah cross country teams will head to Provo, Utah, to compete in the Mountain West Conference Championship meet on Friday, Nov. 1. The race will be held at Provo East Bay Golf Course with a 4:15 p.m. start time. Hosted by Brigham Young, this meet features all MWC teams including nationally ranked BYU, Colorado State and New Mexico. It will decide the final team and individual placements within the conference, and will also weigh heavily for or against Utah's qualifying for the NCAA championship meet. Head Coach Brian Appell expects the men's team to fight for the second through fourth spots, while he foresees the women's team challenging for third place.

QUOTING HEAD COACH BRIAN APPELL:
On the men's side
"The teams are very tight this year for the top five spots in the team battle," states Appell, "We hope to take advantage of others' mistakes and take charge."
On the women's side
"The women solidly beat New Mexico and Air Force at the Pre-National Meet (Oct. 19) and will try to catch BYU and CSU this weekend."
LAST MEET:
The University of Utah cross country teams competed in the Pre-National Meet on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Utes ran without freshman Kurt Michels, who withdrew from the race before the one-mile marker due to a knee injury. Michels is expected to be back for the Mountain Regional Championship on Nov. 16. The men's team, running 8,000 meters, finished 15th out of 35 (391 points), while the women finished 27th out of 38 (707 points), running a 6,000 meter race.
Junior Delfino Arevalo led the men's team placing 20th (24:28) out of 235 runners. Following Arevalo were senior Lion Gallegos at 68th (25:09), junior Colby Frazier at 88th (25:18) and sophomore Brent Moore at 90th (25:21).
On the women's side, junior Tara Hall led the way placing 86th (21:68), followed by sophomore Charity Vernon at 94th (22:01) and freshman Stacie Grover at 168th (22:46).
"Both teams should move up in the regional ranking after this meet," said Appell. "They are steadily improving, but we are still not guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Championship meet and have to step it up in order to make earn a spot."
UTES ON THE MOVE:
Junior Delfino Arevalo has led the men's team in their last two meets. He piloted the men's team at the Roy Griak Invitational at 43rd (25:04.10) on Sep. 28 and again at the Pre-National meet on Oct. 19 with a 20th (24.28) overall finish. "Delfino had an impressive outing at the NCAA Pre-National race two weeks ago and looks to continue in his improvement at the conference championships," says Appell.
NEXT MEET:
Next on the schedule for Utes is the Mountain Region Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on Nov. 16.
