SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Brandon Warfield ran for a career-high 194 yards and a touchdown as Utah defeated rival Brigham Young 13-6, ensuring the Cougars' first losing season in 29 years.
Behind Warfield's running, Utah (5-6, 3-4 Mountain West) controlled the ball throughout the game, but a missed field goal with 2:09 left gave the Cougars (5-7, 2-5) a final chance.
After Bryan Borreson missed his second field goal from 33 yards, Bret Engemann moved the Cougars into Utah territory before the drive stalled.
Josh Savage sacked Engemann, the preseason starter who was forced back into action after Matt Berry and Lance Pendleton were injured, on fourth down to seal the game.
BYU hasn't had a losing season since 1973, when it went 5-6 in coach Lavell Edwards' second season.
Warfield's 194 yards rushing were the most ever by a player in the series. BYU finished with minus-2 yards on the ground.
Utah, which is trying to save coach Ron McBride's job, beat the Cougars at home for the first time since 1994.
Utah fans stormed the field, tore down the goal posts, and carried McBride around the field chanting, "Keep Coach Mac!"
McBride, in his 13th season, has coached Utah to six bowl games since 1992 but came under fire when Utah - the preseason Mountain West Conference favorite - lost six in a row to end any bowl hopes.
Utah stopped two BYU drives in the fourth quarter with turnovers. Brooks Bahr recovered a missed handoff from BYU quarterback Matt Berry, who was hurt in the scramble for the loose ball, at the Utah 10.
On the Cougars' next drive, Sheldon Deckart intercepted backup quarterback Lance Pendleton, leading to Bryan Borreson's 22-yard field goal and a 13-6 advantage with 7:09 left.
BYU got two field goals by Matt Payne but lost a fumble at the Utah goal line with 1:22 left before halftime.
With the victory, Utah won the Beehive Boot, which is awarded to the Utah team with the best record in in-state games.
It was 79th meeting between the rivals since 1922. Utah leads the series 46-28-4, though BYU had won three straight in Salt Lake City.
BYU led the nation last year averaging 46.7 points, but has only topped the 20-point mark in half of its games this season.
