Evanston, Ill. - The University of Utah's women's tennis team suffers their second defeat on the road. The Utes were overcome by No. 17 Northwestern , 7-0. The Utes fought hard, but weren't able to pull through. This defeat puts the Utes at 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in the MWC.
In singles action, senior Linn Ronnberg fell to No. 9 Marine Piriou, 6-1, 6-2. In the second spot, Irini Kotoglou was defeated by No. 55 Lia Jackson, 6-4, 6-3. Utah's Sheri Esrock was beaten by No. 93 Jessica Rush, 6-3, 7-6. Freshman Ellen Svensson was defeated by Andrea Yung, 6-1, 6-2. Allison Hansen was swept by Simona Petrutiu, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Cassie Kasteler was overpowered by Kristi Roemer, 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles action, the Ronnberg and Esrock duo were defeated by Jackson and Petrutiu, 8-3. Hansen and Kasteler struggled to hold on as they were defeated by Piriou and Rush, 8-0. Kotoglou and Svensson were overcome by Ruth Barnes and Stacy Kokx, 8-2.
The women netters travel to San Francisco, Calif. to continue their five game road trip. They will take on San Francisco University, Feb. 13 at 10:00 a.m. "Purdue and Northwestern are very good," says head coach John Tsumas. " I think we have learned a lot from these matches and I hope we can get back to our winning ways."
