SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah's women's tennis team falls to No. 12 Washington, 7-0. The 9-1 Huskies have defeated many top-ranked opponents including No. 26 Alabama, No. 29 Washington State and No. 44 San Diego State. This loss snapped Utah's two game winning streak and puts them at 5-3 on the season.
In singles action, senior Linn Ronnberg was etched out by Claire Carter, 7-6, 6-2. Sheri Esrock was defeated by Ilona Kordonskaya, 7-6, 6-1. Irini Kotoglou was overcome by Colleen Gray, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Ellen Svensson was defeated by Andrea Coulter, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Cassie Kasteler was beaten by Erin Hoe, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 and Allison Hansen was overwhelmed by Dea Sumantri, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, Kasteler and Svensson were defeated by Carter and Klaic, 8-2. The Ronnberg and Esrock duo were ousted by Gray and Sumantri, 8-4 and Kotoglou and Hansen were defeated by Coulter and Kordonskaya, 8-2.
The Utes will continue play tomorrow, Mar. 2 against Kansas. This match will be played at noon at the Eccles Tennis Center. "Washington has a very impressive team," said head coach John Tsumas. "We wanted to use this opportunity to break out into national rankings, but we played extremely hard and I'm proud of our team."
