THIS WEEK: The Utes will compete against Rice and top-seeded TCU. The 6-9 Rice Owls were ranked No. 75 in the ITA polls, but dropped out of last weeks ranking. TCU is ranked No. 31 in the polls and have acquired a 9-3 overall record. The Rice match will be played Friday, Mar. 15 at 6:00 p.m. and the TCU bout will begin Sunday, Mar. 17 at 11:00 a.m. Both matches will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center.
THE UTES: Utah went 1-1 in last week's competition. The Utes defeated Idaho State, 5-2, but lost to No. 62 ranked SMU, 4-3. Against Idaho State, junior Sheri Esrock defeated Hayli Scott, 6-3, 6-2. Captain Cassie Kasteler etched out Carol Tolsma, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Ellen Svensson dowsed Kristina Arutjunova, 6-2, 6-0 and Allison Hansen defeated Melanie Kranz, 4-6, 6-3, (retired). In the SMU match, Utah's Irini Kotoglou triumphed over Jenny Langer, 6-3, 7-6. Esrock etched out Allison Leuszler, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and Svensson defeated Siayareh Rambally, 6-4, 6-1.
COMING UP: Next up, Utah begins conference play and will face two nationally ranked opponents in San Diego State and UNLV. San Diego State is ranked No. 48 this year with a 5-5 record and the UNLV Rebels are ranked No. 41 with a combine 8-2 overall record. The San Diego State match is Friday, Mar. 22 at 10:00 a.m. and the UNLV match will be played Saturday, Mar. 23 at 10:00 a.m. Both these matches will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center.
