SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah's women's tennis team was etched out by No. 29 ranked TCU, 7-0. The (11-4) TCU Horn Frogs were just to much for the Runnin Utes. This defeat puts the Utes at 7-7 on the season.
In singles action, Sheri Esrock competed well, but was defeated by No. 99 ranked Paty Aburto, 6-3, 7-6, 6-4. Senior Linn Ronnberg went into extended sets with No. 96 Katrin Gaber before being etched out, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Irini Kotoglou also performed well, but was notched by No. 112 ranked Saber Pierce, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6. Cassie Kasteler was defeated by Rosa Perez, 6-2, 6-2. Allison Hansen was edged by Leoni Weirich, 6-0, 6-3 and freshman Hilary Doyle was overcome by Karla Mancinas, 6-4, 6-0.
In doubles action, the Utes fought hard but just didn't have enough to hold off the Horn Frogs. Kotoglou and Doyle were ousted by Perez and Aburto, 8-4. Kasteler and Hansen were defeated by Pierce and Weirich, 8-2 and Ronnberg and Esrock were notched by Gaber and Mancinas, 8-6.
Next up, the women's tennis team will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete against No. 53 San Diego State and No. 27 ranked UNLV. These two matches will be the Utes first MWC competition since earlier this season. The women netters began conference, Jan. 20, with a 4-3 victory over Air Force. Utah is in first place in the MWC standings with a 1-0 record. The San Diego State match will be played Friday, Mar. 22 at 10:00 a.m. and the UNLV match will begin Saturday, Mar. 23 at 10:00 a.m.
