THIS WEEK: The women netters will be traveling to Las Vegas, Nev. to take on No. 53 San Diego State and No. 27 UNLV. This will be the Utes' first MWC match ups since earlier this season. Utah defeated Air Force, Jan. 20, to take a (1-0) first place seeding in the MWC.
THE UTES: Utah split in last week's matches 1-1. The Utes notched the Rice Owls, 4-3 in the first match but were defeated later by TCU, 7-0. Against Rice, Sheri Esrock etched out Owl, Jeri Gonzales, in extended sets to seal the victory. Esrock defeated Gonzales, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6. "We played tough," remarked Esrock. "It's great to finally pull out a tough match and win one for the team."
In the TCU match up, the Utes seemed overwhelmed. The top-ranked Horn Frogs had three nationally ranked players, which made it difficult for the Utes. Esrock was ousted by No. 99 Paty Aburto, 6-3, 7-6, 6-4. Senior Linn Ronnberg was defeated by No. 96 Katrin Gaber, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 and Irini Kotoglou was edged out by No. 112 ranked Saber Pierce, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6.
COMING UP: The Utes will be back at home to face the No. 27 ranked Rebels of UNLV. The (10-2) Rebels have defeated many ranked opponents including: No. 17 William & Mary, No. 30 Indiana, No. 40 South Alabama and No. 48 ranked Pennsylvania. The match will be played Friday, Mar. 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
QUOTING TSUMAS: "We are confident about this week's matches," says Tsumas. "We have been playing many nationally ranked teams and I think we have learned a lot from our loses."
