ANCHORAGE - With a top-caliber performance from the men's alpine team, the University of Utah ski team is in third place after Day 1 of competition at the NCAA Ski Championships. Wednesday's championships featured the men's and women's giant slalom.
The Utes had three top-10 finishes in the men's giant slalom to lead all team scores in the event. Pierre Olsson led the Utes with a second place finish. Olsson had the top first-time run and put together the third fastest second run. The runner-up slot marks Olsson's fourth second-place finish in the giant slalom this season.
After a decent first run, Josh Whitham put together an impressive second run to solidify a seventh-place finish for the Utes. Defending NCAA slalom champion, Jernej Bukovec placed ninth in the giant slalom for the second-consecutive year.
April Mancuso - who earned two giant slalom victories this season and placed 15th in last year's NCAA Championships - skied to a second place finish in the women's GS. Mancuso had the fastest second-run time. Annik Boulva had a solid showing by finishing 19th. Petra Svet was in third place after the first run, but fell on the second. She was forced to hike and finished 32nd.
"Everyone skied well," said alpine coach Ryan Forsyth. "Our guys did an outstanding job. Petra [Svet] caught the edge of some loose powder and fell. That hurt us, but overall we did a good job. For the slalom event on Friday, we just need to have consistency and confidence."
Denver leads the competition (192) followed by Vermont (177), Utah (170), Colorado (153) and New Mexico (142). Competition will resume on Thursday with the men's and women's cross country classical events at Kincaid Park. The alpine team will be back in action on Friday for the slalom events, with the cross country team wrapping up the championships with the freestyle events on Saturday.
