ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The University of Utah ski team climbed to second place in Thursday's NCAA Ski Championships via a strong performance in the men's 10-K classical event. At the halfway point of the championships, the Utes trail only Denver. Colorado and New Mexico give the western region the top-four places, with Vermont falling from second to fifth.
Olympian Torin Koos finished fourth in the men's 10-K classical behind a trio of Denver skiers, just 21.8 seconds off the leader. Junior Ryan Quinn had a seventh-place showing for the Utes. Team captain, Petter Svendsen, gave Utah three top-10 performances by contributing an eighth-place finish.
In the women's 5-K classical, Jaana Kettunen led the Utes. Kettunen's 13th-place finish just topped Sara Svendsen's 14th-place showing. A 26th place finish by Jorunn Oye wrapped up Utah's scoring in the event.
Petra Svet and Jernej Bukovec will defend their NCAA slalom titles on Friday, with the women's slalom starting at 10:15 (PT) and the men's kicking off at 11:15 (PT). Competition will wrap up on Saturday with the men's and women's cross country freestyle.
