ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Heading into the final day of the NCAA Ski Championships, the University of Utah ski team is in second place. Friday's competition featured the men's and women's slalom events. The Utes notched the top team results to gain ground on the leader, Denver. With just the freestyle cross country events left, Utah trails DU by 15.5 points. Colorado, New Mexico and Vermont round out the top five.
Petra Svet, who was the 2001 NCAA women's slalom champion, put together two strong runs to grasp a third-place finish in the slalom. Annik Boulva contributed a top-10 finish by skiing to sixth place. April Mancuso, who placed second in Wednesday's giant slalom, added a 26th-place showing for the Utes.
After having the fastest first-run time, Pierre Olsson gave the Ute men a podium finish with his second-place finish in the slalom. Defending men's NCAA slalom champion, Jernej Bukovec tie for seventh place after having the fastest second-run time. Josh Whitham wrapped up Utah's scoring in 27th.
Competition will wrap up on Sunday with the men's and women's cross country freestyle events. The women's team, anchored by Jorunn Oye, has provided consistent freestyle results all season. Oye has three podium finishes in the event this season, including a first-place victory at the Denver Invitational. Sara Svendsen and Jaana Kettunen have provided top-10 results throughout the season.
Petter Svendsen and Ryan Quinn have been the top skiers in the men's freestyle this season. With the return of Olympian Torin Koos, the Utes are looking to wrap-up competition and contend for their 11th national championship.
"I'm proud of the alpine team's performance throughout the championships," said head coach Kevin Sweeney. Our third scorer has plagued us throughout the season and it hurt us again here, but to have four skiers in the top-10 is a great day."
"The championships have been tough," Sweeney continues. "We are not giving up and we are going to ski to our highest level. Saturday will be very interesting. We are in a good position, but we are vulnerable and we are needing to have an exceptional day to come out on top."
