Salt Lake City - The University of Utah softball, team for the third week in a row, made two amazing comebacks and defeated the UNLV Rebels, 11-10 and 6-5 in a MWC meeting in Salt Lake City on Sun., Apr. 21. Utah improves to 22-31 overall, 9-3 in MWC play. UNLV drops to 23-31 on the season, 3-9 in the MWC.
In game one, Utah?s Lyndsey Trevis notched a single through the left side, scoring Traci Keller to lift the Utes to an 11-10 win over the Rebels. Trevis went 1-for-4 in the game with two RBI. Masie Ota was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Niki Hayhurst went 1-for-3 with a double, one run and three RBI. Heather Bowlin picked up a double, and Angie Kenney was a perfect 1-for-1 with one run scored. Heather Bowlin threw 6.0 innings and gave up 11 hits, two earned runs and three runs in 32 batters faced. Teammate Jen Pursell came in to close the game and recorded the win for the Utes. Pursell threw 1.0 inning and gave up zero hits, zero runs and one walk in five batters faced. As a team, Utah tallied 12 hits in 31 at bats, along with 11 runs and 10 RBI.
UNLV?s Wendy Godwin tagged a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to put the Rebels up 9-8. Pauline Glenn went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Kacey Ellis went 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI. Jackie Kerrigan (8-14) took the loss for UNLV after pitching 4.2 innings and giving up seven hits, five runs and three walks in 25 batters faced. As a team, the Rebels notched 11 hits and 10 runs in 32 at bats.
Game two saw the Utes battle into extra-innings to make another incredible come-from-behind win. The Utes were down 5-4 in the top of the 10th inning on a solo home run by UNLV?s Geney Orris. Ute outfielder Traci Keller matched it with a solo homer of her own in the bottom of the 10th inning to keep the Utes alive. In the bottom of the 11th inning, Niki Hayhurst ripped a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Masie Ota to win the game. Hayhurst ended the game going 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Melissa Stahnke went 1-for-2 with a home run, one run and two RBI. Jen Pursell (12-15) picked up the win for Utah. She gave up 12 hits, four earned runs and two walks, including seven strike outs in 48 batters faced.
UNLV?s Geney Orris went 3-for-4 in the game with back-to-back home runs. Orris hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh and a solo home run in the top of the 10th. She ended the day with three runs scored and four RBI. Orris also took the loss for the Rebels. She gave up 10 hits, six runs and eight walks in 10.1 innings pitched.
?When Geney Orris tied the game, I thought, we can still win this,? said Head Coach Mona Stevens. ?When she homered again, I thought it would be hard to come back from, but Traci Keller came back for us and hit a solo home run that kept us in it. She was clutch. It was a total team effort and I am happy for the win.?
UP NEXT: On Tues., Apr. 23, the Utes take on the Utah State Aggies in a single-game contest at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will face Southern Utah on Wed., Apr. 24 for a single-game match-up in Cedar City, Utah at 3:00 p.m. On Sat., Apr. 27, the Utes will play in-state rival BYU in Provo, Utah (DH) at 12:00 p.m. Utah travels to Albuquerque, N.M. on Fri., May 3, facing New Mexico in a doubleheader match-up at 1:00 p.m. On Sun., May 5, the Utes will take on the Colorado State Rams at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Collins, Colo (DH). The Utes will host the Utah State Aggies in a non-conference match-up at 3:00 p.m. on Tues., May 7. On Thurs.-Sat. May 9-11, Utah will participate in the MWC Tournament held in Provo, Utah.
