Salt Lake City - The University of Utah received an automatic selection to compete in the 48-team NCAA Division I Softball Championships. The Utes are the No. 5 seed in Region V which will be played in Norman, Okla., May 16-19. Utah will play Oklahoma in the first round of the double elimination event on Thurs., May 16, at 2:30 p.m. (CST) in Norman, Okla. Six teams will compete in each of eight regionals with the winners advancing to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., May 23-27.
The Mountain West Conference tournament champion, Utah enters the tournament with a 30-34 record. Utah is making its third trip to the NCAA tournament since 1995 and its 11th NCAA appearance overall. The Utes own a 17-23 NCAA record, including a 16-15 mark in NCAA regional play, and have advanced to the Women's College World Series four times (1982, '85, '91 and '94) with a 1-6 slate.
The Utes are led by senior Molly McLean a 2002 all-MWC selection. McLean lead the team with a .343 batting average, 27 stolen bases, 213 at bats, 40 runs scored and 73 hits. The Utes' supporting cast features four All-Mountain West Conference selections and three all-tournament team honorees including the tournament MVP. Lyndsey Trevis, a 2002 all-MWC and all-MWC tournament pick leads the team in several statistical categories and is Utah's defensive ace. Sophomore shortstop Melissa Stahnke made both the all-conference and all-tournament squads, while junior pitcher Jen Pursell made the all-tournament squad and was named the MWC tournament MVP.
Head coach Mona Stevens is in her sixth season with the Utes and brings a 217-148-1 record into the NCAA tournament.
Also competing in Region I are the No. 1 seed Texas (48-11), which faces Army (30-17-1) in the first round, and No. 2 seed Oklahoma (45-14) which will play the Utes (30-34). Texas A&M (38-16) is the No. 3 seed and will match-up with the No. 4 seed Arkansas (32-26).
"I'm so happy for our team, said head coach mona Stevens. "They really deserve this and I am proud of the way our team stuck together throughout our season. We had many obstacles to overcome and this is a tribute to our program," said Stevens.
