Salt Lake City - The 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women's Softball team as selected by CoSIDA was announced Thurs., May 9, and 21 female student-athlete?s representing 14 different NCAA Division I institutions were honored. Utah's Molly McLean claimed first-team honors, while teammate Melissa Stahnke garnered second-team honors.
First team selections include: Cindy Ball (P/Pacific), Erica Beach (P/Arizona State), Courtney Scott (C/California), Sarah Beeson (IF/Stanford), Kara Brun (IF/Arizona State), Lindsay Fossatti (IF/Fresno State), Kate Judd (IF/Hawaii), Stacie Hirano (OF/Hawaii), Molly McLean (OF/Utah) and Tiffany Whipple (OF/Fresno State).
Second team selections include: Megan Herscher (P/Portland State), Nicole Truax (P/UNLV), Breanne Smith (C/Utah State), Meghan Cunningham (IF/Sacramento State), Alyssa Laux (IF/Oregon), Melissa Stahnke (IF/Utah), Robin Walker (IF/Stanford), Bridget Byrne (OF/UNLV), Christy Cerecedes (OF/Loyola Marymount), Sondra Milchiker (OF/Cal State Northridge) and Estee Okumura (OF/Pacific).
In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season at their current school.
The 11 first-team all-district selections will now be on the national Verizon/CoSIDA Women's Softball Academic All-America ballot. The national winners will be announced on Thurs., June 6, 2002. Members of CoSIDA in the states of California, Hawaii, Arizona, Alaska, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah were responsible for voting on the squad.
