Norman, Okla. - The University of Utah softball team was eliminated at the NCAA Region V Tournament by the Army Black Knights, 2-0 on Thurs., May 16. Utah ends its season with a 30-36 overall record, 10-4 in MWC play. Army (31-18-1) advances to meet Arkansas (38-27-1) tomorrow in game five of the regional tournament at 2:30 p.m.
Both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Army's Bianca Britto scored on a single up the middle by Niki Robbins. Teammate Lisa Huntington doubled to the left side to score Robbins and the Black Knights went on to win, 2-0.
The Utes stranded five runners on the base paths and managed just three hits in the game. Traci Keller went 2-for-3, while teammate Melissa Stahnke notched one hit in the game. Heather Bowlin took the loss for Utah, she ends the season with a 12-17 overall record. Bowlin pitched 6.0 innings and gave up four hits, two earned runs, zero walks and struck out five in 23 batters faced.
Army's Lisa Huntington went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Teammate Nicki Robbins went 1-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI. Shauna Evans picked up the win for the Black Knights. Evans pitched 7.0 innings and gave up three hits, zero runs and two walks while fanning six in 26 batters faced.
"One of the best things we do as a team is hit the ball and we certainly haven't shown it this whole tournament," said Head Coach Mona Stevens. "Its so frustrating because we have so much power as a team. Both pitchers had us completely fooled today. I'll give it up to Army, they sure are scrappy and they just stick with it and never give up. You could feel their spirits jump up when they had a runner in scoring position. The first time they had a runner in scoring position, they capitalized on it and we had a lot of chances and didn't. We just weren't here offensively."
