Fort Collins, Colo. - In the last two regular season MWC games for the University of Utah softball team, the Utes took both games from the Colorado State Rams. On a sunny day when the two CSU seniors were thanked for their contributions to their program, the Rams were run-ruled in game one, losing 11-0 in five innings and then after a hard fought game, lost the second game 7-5. The Utes earned the second seed in the upcoming Mountain West Tournament and improved to 26-33 overall and 10-4 in league action, while Colorado State dropped to 17-31 on the season and 4-15 in Mountain West Conference play.
In the first inning, the Utes scored three runs on three hits and then they exploded for seven runs on six hits in the third inning. The third inning included a Molly McLean grand slam ? the first of her career ? and a Melissa Stahnke two run homer over the left field wall, the 66th home run of her career, leaving her one short of tying the Utah career record for home runs. The Rams had just five hits in the contest, with five different batters getting a hit.
Heather Bowlin worked the entire game for the Utes, giving up no runs on five hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. The Utes would tally 11 runs on 11 hits in the game.
The second game the Rams scored the first run in the bottom of the first. Steph Roberts doubled to left center to start the game and then was moved to third on a Kerry Farrell bunt. Roberts would score on a single to second base by Kocis. Utah would score two runs in the top of the third, but the Rams would answer in the bottom of the inning with one run to knot the score at 2-2. Farrell singled to left field, stole second and then scored on a Kocis single. In the top of the fourth the Utes would score five runs on four hits to take a 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Rams would score three runs to bring the score to 7-5, but were unable to score any more, stranding two runners on base. Katie Koch started the inning with a bunt single and then Roberts moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Koch would then advance to third on a fielder?s choice by Farrell on a great play by Michele Larsen at second base who scrambled on her knees to the bag after fielding the ball. Kocis would then single up the middle to score Koch and on a throwing error by the third baseman would advance to third and score Farrell. Ricki Walker then walked and Christensen singled up the middle to score Kocis and Lindsay Haun ? pinch running for Walker ? would move to third. The Rams would then have Jen Mahoney reach on a fielders choice and Stone would ground into a double play to end the inning.
Jen Pursell pitched the whole game for Utah, giving up five runs on 11 hits with three walks and four strikeouts, while Megan Masser worked the entire game for the Rams in the circle, giving up seven runs on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
