Salt Lake City - The University of Utah softball team defeated the Utah State Aggies, 3-2 in a non-conference match-up in Salt Lake City on Tues., May 7. Utah improves to 27-33 overall, 10-4 in MWC play. Utah State drops to 10-43 on the season. The Utes honored its five seniors, Christa Pfeninger, Angie Kenney, Michele Larsen, Lyndsey Trevis and Molly McLean for all of the hard work and dedication that they have contributed to the Utah women's softball program over the past four years.
Utah's Michele Larsen had the game winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring Texie Criddle. Larsen went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Niki Hayhurst went 3-for-4 on the day with a double and two RBI. Teammates Molly McLean, Angie Kenney, Kelsie Lewis and Masie Ota picked up one hit each in the game. Jen Pursell threw 4.0 innings and gave up four hits, two runs and zero walks in 17 batters faced before teammate Heather Bowlin came in to close the game. Bowlin pitched 5.0 innings and gave up four hits, zero runs and zero walks in 19 batters faced. As a team, Utah tallied eight hits in 31 at bats, along with three runs and three RBI.
Utah State's Heather Curtis went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Teammate Casey Smith went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Marnie Andrews went 2-for-4 in the game. Kristin Hommel (6-18) took the loss for the Aggies after pitching 8.2 innings and giving up eight hits and three runs in 43 batters faced. As a team, the Aggies totaled eight hits in 34 at bats, along with two runs and two RBI.
UP NEXT: On Thurs.-Sat. May 9-11, Utah will participate in the MWC Tournament held in Provo, Utah.
