COMING UP: On Thurs.-Sat. May 9-11, Utah will participate in the MWC Tournament held in Provo, Utah. Utah will face the winner of game one {No. 3 UNLV (29-32, 8-8 MWC) vs. No. 6 Colorado State (17-31, 4-15 MWC)} on Thurs., May 9 at 4:30 p.m. at Gail Miller Field.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The University of Utah softball team is on a four-game win streak. Most recently, the Utes defeated the Utah State Aggies, 3-2, in a non-conference match-up on Tues., May 7 in Salt Lake City. Last weekend, Utah went 3-1 on the road wrapping up MWC regular-season play. The Utes swept the Colorado State Rams, 11-0 and 7-5 on Sun., May 5 in Fort Collins, Colo. Previously, Utah split with New Mexico, losing the first game, 8-6 and winning the late game, 11-10 in Albuquerque, N.M. on Fri., May 3. Currently, the Utes are 27-33-0 overall, 10-4 in MWC play.
Utah has faced 12 teams this season that made it to the NCAA Tournament last year. Utah has played 24 teams that were ranked or received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. Overall, the Utes are 2-21 on the season vs. teams that are ranked or have received votes.
The 2002 Mountain West Conference Softball Championship will be hosted by Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. All six Mountain West Conference teams will compete in the double-elimination tournament May 9-11.
QUOTING STEVENS: On the upcoming MWC Tournament- ?I feel the team is stable, prepared and confident about where they are going. I think they will be tough to beat and this is a big tournament for us. It is always tough to play on the road, but I am confident we will show up and play tough.?
SCOUTING BRIGHAM YOUNG: The BYU Cougars are currently 29-21 overall, 6-10 in MWC play. Brigham Young enters the MWC Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face the No. 4 seed New Mexico on Thurs., May 9 at 2:00 p.m. in Provo, Utah. Most recently, the Cougars were swept by the New Mexico Lobos, 8-7 and 6-2 on Sat., May 4 in Albuquerque, N.M. BYU is the No. 5 seed and will match-up with the No. 4 seed New Mexico on Thurs., May. 9 at 2:00 p.m.
SCOUTING COLORADO STATE: Colorado State enters the post-season with a 17-31 overall record, 4-15 in MWC play. The Rams went 0-4 last weekend, losing to both Utah and BYU. On Sun., May 5, CSU lost 11-0 and 7-5 to the Utes, and were swept by the BYU Cougars 1-0 and 2-1 on Thurs., May 2. Colorado State ends the MWC regular-season 6th in the standings and will face the No. 3 seed UNLV in the tourney on Thurs., May 9 at 11:30 a.m.
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO: The New Mexico Lobos end the regular-season with a 17-27-1 overall record, 9-10 in MWC play. The Lobos swept the BYU Cougars, 8-7 and 6-2 on Sat., May 4 and split with Utah, winning game one 8-6 and losing the late game, 11-10 on Fri., May 3 in Albuquerque, N.M. New Mexico gained the No. 4 seed in the tourney and will match-up with the No. 5 seed BYU on Thurs., May 9 at 2:00 p.m.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE: San Diego State captured the No. 1 seed in the MWC Tournament and will face the winner of the BYU/New Mexico game on Thurs., May 9 at 7:00 p.m. The Aztecs have a 39-21-1 overall record and are 14-4 in MWC play. Last week, SDSU split with UNLV, winning the first game, 6-1 and losing the second one, 2-1 on Sat., May 4 in San Diego, Calif.
SCOUTING UNLV: The Rebels of UNLV are currently 29-32 overall, 8-8 in MWC play. UNLV lost game one to San Diego State, 6-1 and won the nightcap, 2-1 on Sat., May 4 in San Diego, Calif. UNLV is currently 3rd in the MWC standings and will face the No. 6 seed Colorado State on Thurs., May 9 at 11:30 a.m.
UP NEXT: The Utes will await the chance to participate in the NCAA Regional Tournament on Thurs.-Sun., May. 16-19.
HEAD COACH MONA STEVENS: Mona Stevens, who has built a reputation as one of the top coaches in the nation on both the national and international levels, is in her fifth season as head coach at Utah.
Stevens has the best winning percentage in school history. She currently posts a 214-147-1 (.593) career overall record and an 85-51-1 (.624) career conference record in five seasons. Her 2000 team was the NCAA Region 1 Tournament runner-up, and placed third in the NCAA Regional Tournament in 1997. Stevens was selected as the 2000 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.
2002 UTAH RANKINGS IN THE MWC: Utah, as a team leads the MWC in batting average (.265), total bases (607), hits (425) and doubles (68). The Utes are second in at bats (1605), RBI (186), batters struck out (223), on base percentage (.341), stolen bases (56), triples (9), walks (153), slugging percentage (.378), and third in sac bunts (52), home runs (32), innings pitched (367.2). Utah is fourth in runs scored (210), opposing batting average (.280), ERA (3.14) and batters struck out looking (54). Individually, 11 Utah players ranked among the top 10 in the MWC statistical leaders a combined 57 times.
STEVENS HITS 200TH CAREER WIN: Utah?s winningest coach in school history, Mona Stevens recorded her 200th career win on Tues., Apr. 2 with a 6-2 victory over Utah State in Logan, Utah.
SOFTBALL HITS 800TH CAREER WIN: Utah, as a team recorded its 800th career win on Sat., Apr. 14 with an 8-7 victory over in-state rival BYU.
STAHNKE CHASING THE UTAH CAREER HOME RUN RECORD: Sophomore Melissa Stahnke is chasing the Utah career home run record. Stahnke is currently in second place all time with 36 home runs. The current record of 37 home runs was set by Cyndee Bennett (1994-97).
