Colorado Springs, Colo. - The All-Mountain West Conference Softball awards as selected by the league's six head coaches were announced yesterday in conjunction with the start of the Mountain West Conference Softball Championship in Provo, Utah. The championship begins today (Thursday, May 9) and runs through Saturday, May 11, at Gail Miller Field on the BYU campus.
The 20-member all-conference team includes four players from Utah. Seniors Lyndsey Trevis and Molly McLean were repeat selections, as were junior Niki Hayhurst and sophomore Melissa Stahnke. Rounding out the all-MWC team were seven players from San Diego State, four players from New Mexico, three players from BYU and two from UNLV.
UNLV's Geney Orris claimed Player of the Year honors, while San Diego State freshman Bre DeSanta captured the Pitcher of the Year award as well as Freshman of the Year acclaim for the regular season champion Aztecs. SDSU?s Kathy Van Wyk collected Coach of the Year. The Aztecs, picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll, finished 14-4 in conference play and 39-21-1 overall to win their first regular season title as members of the MWC.
