SALT LAKE CITY - Kevin Sweeney, in just his fourth year as head coach, piloted the University of Utah's ski team to its 11th NCAA Championship in 2003. Sweeney took reigns of the Ute ski program in 2000 after eight years as an assistant coach.
This is the first time Sweeney has received the Don Reddish Award, which is presented annually to the coach of a sport other than football, men's and women's basketball and gymnastics, who is deemed to have had the most successful season the previous year.
Utah placed no lower than fourth in any invitational last season, while skiing to a first-place finish at the RMISA Regional Championships. At the NCAAs, Utah's 131-point triumph over runner-up Vermont marked the biggest margin of victory ever in NCAA Championship history.
During his tenure as a head and as an assistant coach, the Utes have won four NCAA Championships and have been in contention for the title every season. Sweeney has coached 12 NCAA national champions, four Olympians, three junior national champions and one current member of the U.S. Ski Team.
Sweeney is presently a member of the NCAA Skiing Rules Committee and is a member of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association's Cross Country Skiing Committee. He also served as an assistant to the U.S. Ski Team at the World Championships in Ramsau, Austria.
The seasoned veteran is the ninth coach in the 53-year history of the Ute program and takes great pride in representing the rich tradition of Utah skiing.
