Morgan Scalley Is Named FIrst-Team Academic All-American

University of Utah defensive back Morgan Scalley has been named a CoSIDA first-team Academic All-American?, the CoSIDA national office announced today. Scalley is the first Ute football player since 1976, and just the fourth ever, to make CoSIDA's first-team. The Academic All-America team is voted on by the nation's sports information directors.
Scalley was the only player from a Mountain West Conference school placed on the 2003 first team. The CoSIDA football Academic All-American of the year is Ohio State quarterback Craig Krenzel.
Scalley, a junior communication major owns a 3.95 cumulative GPA and has started every game this season for the 9-3, conference champion Utes. Scalley has 69 tackles (third on the team), four tackles for loss, two interceptions and two pass breakups. The Salt Lake City native (Highland HS) is also a critical part of Utah's special teams and has returned two kickoffs for a total of 109 yards and a long return of 89 yards.
Previous Ute football honorees on the academic first-team were Mel Carpenter (1964), Scott Robbins (1971), Steve Odom (1973) and Dick Graham (1976). Recent Ute football players to win CoSIDA Academic All-America honors were Kimball Christianson and Brooks Bahr, who made the second-team in 2000 and 2003, respectively.
