SALT LAKE CITY-University of Utah Head Softball Coach Mona Stevens announced today that the Utes have received national letters of intent from six players for the 2004-05 year. Local players who will be joining the Utes are Diana Phillips of Taylorsville, Staci Hemingway of West Valley and Kaitie Sabol of Salt Lake City. Rounding out the recruits are Sharee Fonoti of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Kelly Matthews and Meghan Crouse of Vancouver, Wash.
"This is a very talented group of athletes that will be joining us next season. They are solid defensively and three of them are amazingly fast," said Head Coach Mona Stevens. "All of our recruits have extensive club ball experience. Their experience and abilities should help alleviate the loss of our three seniors."
Diana Phillips-OF-Taylorsville, Utah (Taylorsville HS)-SLC Firebirds
Phillips will bring blazing speed and tough defense to the Utes. She primarily plays in the outfield. Last season, she was named first-team all-state by the Salt Lake Tribune. She has a 3.765 cumulative GPA.
Stevens on Phillips
"Diana is a great all-around, but it's really her speed and her athleticism that put her in a category many don't reach. She, along with two of our other recruits, should challenge our stolen base records."
Staci Hemingway-3B-West Valley, Utah (Taylorsville HS)-SLC Firebirds
Hemingway is a talented infielder who will likely play third base for Utah. She makes adjustments well based on the situation and is a very solid player. Hemingway is also very aggressive and doesn't get intimidated easily. Her cumulative GPA is 3.95.
Stevens on Hemingway
"We watched Staci in camp and we couldn't get the ball past her at third. She played very well during summer ball. She's a great kid, and we think she is a great asset for our team."
Kaitie Sabol-C-Salt Lake City (Judge Memorial Catholic HS)-SLC Firebirds
Sabol plays catcher, but may also see time at the designated hitter position since she swings a powerful bat. She possesses a lot of raw talent. Sabol boasts a 3.91 GPA. She was named second-team all-state by the Deseret Morning News last year.
Stevens on Sabol
"Strength and coordination pretty much describe Kaitie Sabol. She's a tremendous person and will bring so much to the heart of our team."
Sharee Fonoti-SS-Ewa Beach, Hawaii (Kamehameha Schools)-Na Wahine
Fonoti is very fundamentally sound and a tough defensive player. She brings a great bat to the plate. Fonoti has earned Interscholastic League of Honolulu first-team all-state honors each year she has played. Last season, she posted the highest batting average (.487) in the ILH. Her team finished first in the league and second in the state last year.
Stevens on Fonoti
"Sharee is one of the smoothest shortstops I've seen in a long time. We're going to throw her right into the frying pan and we think she is very capable of handling it."
Kelly Matthews-OF-Vancouver, Wash. (Evergreen HS)-Glacier NW Gold
Outfielder is a two-time GHSL all-league first teamer. She has started varsity since she was a freshman, ranking in the top five on her team for batting average each season. Matthews packs a punch for a 5-foot player, bringing feistiness and competitiveness to the field. She's very fundamentally sound and is a lefty slapper who will put the ball in play.
Stevens on Matthews
"Kelly is pure spunk and guts. She and Meghan (Crouse) are an amazingly powerful package for being as small as they are."
Meghan Crouse-OF-Vancouver, Wash. (Evergreen HS)-Glacier NW Gold
Crouse is a speedy, lefty slapper who covers a lot of ground in the outfield. She is a two-time scholar-athlete who boasts a 4.0 GPA. Crouse was first-team all-league in 2002 for Evergreen HS. She is only 5-foot, like fellow teammate Matthews, but is also very competitive and will knock the ball in play.
Stevens on Crouse
"Meghan is extremely competitive and another speedy lefty slapper. She, Kelly and Diana are going to be one of the best outfields that we've had because of their shear speed. She's also a great leader."
