Phoenix, Ariz.--After dropping three in a row at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament, Utah (2-3) wrapped up play on a good note by upsetting No. 13 Arizona State (6-2), 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Utah built a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Glennis Donnelly doubled to left center to score Masie Ota, who had reached on a fielder's choice, and Melissa Stahnke, who was walked. The Utes doubled their score in the second when a triple by Stahnke brought home Jackie Wong and Bryanne Durrence, who had both singled earlier in the inning. Utah added another run in the fifth off a Sun Devils' error. ASU scored two more in the sixth, but that was it as Utah grabbed the victory.
Stahnke and Donnelly had two RBI apiece to lead the Utes, while eight of the nine starters notched at least one hit in the game. Heather Bowlin gets the win for Utah to improve to 1-1 on the year. In the complete game effort, Bowlin allowed three runs (two earned) off six hits.
Up next, Utah travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the UNLV Classic, Feb. 14-16.
