Las Vegas, Nev.--The University of Utah softball team defeated Hawaii at the UNLV Softball Classic, 4-3.
The Utes used a pair of runs in the first inning and a pair in the fifth to earn the victory. Utah struck first in the game, when Melissa Stahnke reached on a two-out walk and then scored on a monstrous home run by Niki Hayhurst to right field. The lead was short lived as the Wahine followed up with a two-run bomb in the second to make it two all. The Rainbow Wahine added another in the fourth to make it 3-2.
Utah took the lead in the fifth after Glennis Donnelly's infield single scored Jackie Wong and a hustling Masie Ota. Wong had reached on an error and Ota on an infield single. The 4-3 lead would stick as the Utes earned the win.
Jen Pursell gets the victory to improve to 2-2 on the year. Utah faces Portland State at 7:00 p.m. tonight.
