Las Vegas, Nev.--The Utes used 11 hits and a couple Viking errors to roll by Portland State, 8-3 at the UNLV Softball Classic. The win bumps Utah to 4-3 on the season. Utah faces Cal State Fullerton and LSU on Saturday.
It was almost a scene of deja vu as the Utes did damage in the first with two outs just like in the previous game against Hawaii. It was Melissa Stahnke who reached base with two down after a sharp single to left field. Stahnke would then score on a double to deep right by Niki Hayhurst, 1-0. The Utes protected the lead when Traci Keller ran down a long drive down the left field line to throw out a Viking runner pushing for a triple, in the bottom of the first.
In the second, Megumi Hackett singled, stole second and then scored on another Viking single to tie it at one apiece. But the Vikings' hurt themselves with three errors in the third that led to two more Ute runs and a 3-1 Utah lead.
In the fourth, it was a Utah error that put Ivie on base for the Vikings. She would go on to score on a home run to right center by Peccia to tie it at 3-3.
In the top of the fifth, Utah would regain the lead, 5-3, with a pair of runs. Masie Ota, who reached on an error by the pitcher, scored on a wild pitch for the first run. The second run came off a single to the right side by Lynsey Wall. The single scored Stahnke, who had singled earlier in the inning to reach base.
Utah notched three more runs in the top of the seventh to build the final score of 8-3. Heather Bowlin moves to 2-1 on the year after throwing the complete-game victory. Bowlin allowed three runs (two earned) in the game. She wrapped up the effort by striking out two Vikings and catching the third's line drive.
