Las Vegas, Nev.--After winning its last three games, the Utes dropped one to No, 10 Cal State Fullerton, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at the UNLV Softball Classic. The loss drops the Utes to 4-4 on the season.
In the loss, Utah left eight runners stranded, including one on third. Jen Pursell gets the loss for Utah to fall to 2-3 on the year. Pursell gave up just three hits to the Titans, but two were homers. The Utes also notched three hits in the game.
The Titans were the first to put runs on the scoreboard, after All-American Jenny Topping hit a two-run rocket over the right field wall in the top of the first. In the bottom of the second, the Utes cut the lead in half, 2-1. Glennis Donnelly led off the inning by reaching first on an error by the Titans' shortstop. Donnelly would go on the swipe second and advance to third on a wild pitch, en route to scoring on a single up the middle by Bryanne Durrence.
The Utes had their best chance in the bottom of the fifth when they put on the two lead runners. Sarah Lyman reached on a single down the left field line and then Jackie Wong drew a walk. But the next three Utah batters failed to move the runners.
Utah kept the game within one in the sixth, when Lyman tracked down another long ball by Topping at the warning track. But the next Titans' batter knocked a home run to right center to make it 3-1.
