Stockton, Calif.--The Utes dropped a nailbiter to Pacific, 4-3, at the Pacific Mini Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. Utah, which falls to 8-14 on the season, will now travel to Sacramento, Calif., to play in the Capital Classic Tournament this Thursday through Sunday.
A Tiger error put Ute lead-off batter Jackie Wong on base to begin the game. After the next Ute was retired, a red-hot Niki Hayhurst knocked a long ball over the right field fence to put the Utes up 2-0. Pacific chipped away at the lead and tied it in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. In the eighth, both teams managed a run using the International tie-breaker rule to its advantage. But the Utes were blanked in the top of nine and the Tigers went on to score the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
Jen Pursell gets the loss for Utah to fall to 5-7 on the season. Pursell was credited with four runs, one of which was earned. She struck out eight batters, one shy of her career high.
