SACRAMENTO, Calif.--For the third time this week the Utes went into extra innings, and for the third time this week the Utes fell in extra innings. This time is was to Illinois, 3-2, on Thursday night at the Capital Classic Tournament. Utah (8-15) will face Morehead State on Friday at 3:00 p.m. (PT).
Utah pushed for a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth after Glennis Donnelly, who had reached on a double, scored on a single by Lynsey Wall. The Utes doubled their score in the sixth off a home run by Melissa Stahnke. The dinger was Stahnke's second of the week-long road trip. But the 2-0 lead started to fall in the bottom of the inning, as Illinois posted a run and added another in the seventh to force extra innings. The tying run was unearned.
In the bottom of the ninth, an Illinois batter reached up in the zone to drive Jen Pursell's change up to the outfield and score the tie-breaker runner to lift the Fighting Illini past Utah, 3-2.
Pursell completed a strong game for Utah, striking out a career-high 10 batters. She is now 5-7 on the year. Jackie Wong notched two hits in the loss.
