PROVO, Utah--After dropping a tough loss to BYU in game one of a doubleheader, Utah redeemed itself in great fashion. The Utes rolled past the Cougars, 7-2, ending BYU's 12-game winning streak. Utah improves to 11-17, 1-1 MWC and BYU falls to 21-8, 1-1 MWC.
Heather Bowlin tossed a three-hitter and held the conference's best offense to two runs. The hurler struck out two in the game and at one point retired 13 straight. Bowlin is now 4-8 on the year.
"I just tried to erase the first game from our minds and pitch my game," said Bowlin.
The Utes posted two runs in the first, one coming off a single to right by Niki Hayhurst, the other off a Cougar error. In the third, Utah added another off a rocket to left field by Lynsey Wall. It was Wall's third homer of the year.
Utah pushed it to 4-0 in the fourth and then 6-0 in the fifth. In the fifth, Bryanne Durrence knocked an RBI single to right center and eventually scored on a single to short by Masie Ota. The final run came in the sixth after a single to short by Jackie Wong scored Lauren Field, who was pinch running for Ivette Hernandez.
The Cougars scored a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to make it a 7-2 final.
For Utah, Ota notched two RBI in the game to lead Utah. Wong was a perfect 5-of-5 at the plate, including a double, RBI and run scored. Eight of the Utah starters had at least one hit in the win.
