Colorado Springs, Colo.--The Utes fell in game two of a twin bill against Colorado State, 9-7, on Friday afternoon to drop to 12-19, 1-3 MWC. CSU picks up its 24th win of the season (24-9, 5-3 MWC). Utah now travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to face New Mexico in a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday.
Utah broke open the game with six runs in the third to take a 6-0 lead. A Ram error put Jackie Wong on to lead off the inning. Wong would swipe second, en route to scoring on a triple by Texie Criddle. Niki Hayhurst then reached on a fielder's choice, and after a Ute error, Glennis Donnelly connected for a double to score Criddle and move Hayhurst to third. Lynsey Wall followed up with a double of her own that pushed in Hayhurst and Donnelly. After another Ute out and a walk, a fielder's choice put Sarah Lyman on and sent Wall across the plate. Then, Wong hit a single to third to bring in Bryanne Durrence, who had walked, 6-0.
Colorado State put its first digit on the board in the fourth and followed up with another run in the fifth to make it 6-2. In the top of the sixth, Ivette Hernandez drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Melissa Stahnke who had singled earlier in the inning.
What looked to be a comfortable 7-2 lead turned into a nightmare for Utah, as CSU scored seven unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth. It was a barrage of singles and a three-run double that comprised the Rams' offensive outpour as they grabbed a 9-7 victory.
Heather Bowlin began the game for Utah, but was relieved after allowing six runs in 5.0 innings. Jen Pursell is credited with the loss after giving up three runs in 1.0 inning to fall to 6-11.
Utah had nine hits in the game, one from each starter. Wall had the two RBI, while five other Utes knocked in one run each.
