SALT LAKE CITY--The Utes were swept by CSU on Saturday afternoon, as the Rams won the second game of the doubleheader, 11-8. The loss puts Utah's overall record at 17-23 overall and 5-7 in league action.
The second game of the doubleheader proved highly offensive, but despite connecting for 14 hits the Utes couldn't overcome the Rams 11 runs that came in the first three innings. There were five home runs and seven doubles in the game between the two teams. Utah's biggest struggle was bringing home runners, as it stranded 11 compared to CSU's two.
CSU struck first in the game with a pair of runs off a homer. Utah tied the ballgame in the bottom of the inning, when Niki Hayhurst followed up with a two-run dinger. The Rams added another pair in the second before breaking the game open with a seven-run third inning to make it an 11-2 score.
The Utes didn't lay down and die, as they went to score runs in the third and fourth, and eventually four in the sixth. But the deficit was just too much to overcome. Glennis Donnelly led the charge for Utah, homering in the third and knocking a two-run double in the sixth.
Heather Bowlin is credited with the loss for Utah to fall to 4-10 this year. The junior gave up 10 runs in 2.2 innings. Donnelly was 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Hayhurst also finished 3-of-4, while knocking in two runs and scoring three herself.
