SALT LAKE CITY--Utah opened its home season on Wednesday afternoon with a 6-2 victory over in-state rival Utah State. The win improves the Utes' overall record to 12-17, as Utah State falls to 5-23 on the year. Utah now travels to Fort Collins, Colo., to battle Colorado State on Friday and Alburquerque, N.M., to face New Mexico on Sunday in conference doubleheaders.
Utah State looked to be rolling through the first three innings, taking a 2-0 lead while retiring nine of the 10 Ute batters faced. But Utah kicked its offense into gear in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Masie Ota reached base first for the Utes on an Aggie error and then Niki Hayhurst knocked a single to center to move Ota over. After a Ute out, Glennis Donnelly ripped a single to left field to bring in Ota. The next batter, Lynsey Wall, followed up with a two-run RBI to round out the inning's scoring.
With a 3-2 lead, Utah dropped another three on USU in the fifth to make it 6-2. The first run came courtesy of the Aggies, as the pitcher hit Wall with the bases loaded to bring in Ota. The next runs came on a two-run double to center by Ivette Hernandez.
"I was just trying to have fun and not be too nervous while playing in my first home game," said Wall. The freshman led the Utes with three RBI, while going one-of-two at the plate.
"You could tell we hadn't played in awhile," said Head Coach Mona Stevens. "I had confidence in our offense and knew we would come around. The effort we got from our freshman today was great."
Included in those freshman was Wall, Hernandez and Brianna Gourdin. Hernandez just missed a home run that bounced off the top of the center field wall. She was two-of-three today with two RBI.
Gourdin came in to pitch in the fourth after Heather Bowlin started for Utah. Gourdin gets the win (3-0) after allowing one run in 4.0 innings with one strikeout. Bowlin struck out four in 3.0 innings of work.
