SALT LAKE CITY--University of Utah Head Softball Coach Mona Stevens announced today that she has hired Kelly Ferguson as an assistant coach. Ferguson spent the past five years at Texas A&M as a player and as an assistant coach. She joins Stevens and assistant Marianne Bullis at Utah.
"I've known Kelly since she was nine years old," says Stevens, "and she's a ballpark rat. She has experienced high levels of play at the youth and collegiate levels. Kelly has spent the past couple years under A&M head coach and former Ute Jo Evans. She brings great energy and enthusiasm with her and is very excited about the possibilities of being here."
During her playing days for the Aggies, Ferguson was an NFCA All-Region team member, along with first team all-Southland Conference and second team all-Big 12. Off the field Ferguson was equally as successful, garnering three Verizon Academic All-District Awards, while making the Big 12 Honor Roll.
The Sugar Land, Texas, native graduated from A&M in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in recreation, parks and tourism sciences. After graduation, she stayed on with the Aggies as a graduate assistant. Ferguson also served as the A&M consolidated varsity fall head coach.
"Kelly has experience working with the hitters and infielders. However, she spent the past year at A&M working with the outfielders. She really brings a lot to our team. It just feels like a great fit for us," notes Stevens.
