SALT LAKE CITY--Utah avenged itself with a 7-2 win in game two of a twin bill on Saturday versus BYU. The victory gives the two teams a series split. The Utes (20-25, 7-9) blasted eight hits, including a home run by Niki Hayhurst, and used a five-run third inning to roll past BYU (33-15, 11-8).
Jackie Wong led off the game with a single to right field. After the next two Utes were retired, Hayhurst ripped a homer over the left field wall to give Utah a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Utes scored five runs off four hits and two Cougar errors. The first run came when Wong scored on a single down the right field line by Hayhurst. Next, Melissa Stahnke hit a ball to the right side, which was booted by the second baseman, that scored Masie Ota. Two more runs came after Glennis Donnelly knocked a double to left center. Finally, Donnelly scored on a single by Ivette Hernandez.
Down 7-0, BYU smashed a home run in the fourth and seventh to end the shutout and make it a 7-2 final.
Heather Bowlin (5-10) scattered eight hits in 7.0 innings, while striking out four to earn the victory. Boyce, the winner from the first game, gets the loss to fall to 11-4.
Hayhurst was a perfect 2-of-2 at the plate with three RBI, two runs and a walk. Wong had two hits in the victory.
