SAN DIEGO--Utah came up empty in game one of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Thursday, as it fell to New Mexico, 5-0. The loss drops the Utes to 20-26 on the year, while the Lobos improve to 25-35-1. Utah will now face the loser of the BYU vs. Colorado State game on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
Utah's struggles began in the second inning when an error allowed two Lobo runners to score. Then in the fifth, New Mexico made it a 4-0 margin using a sac fly and a passed ball to score two more. The seventh inning saw another error by Utah put a runner on, who would go on to score on a Lobo triple.
The Utes connected for all four of their hits in the first four innings, but were shutdown after that. Amy Dumas picked up the win for New Mexico to improve to 14-15. Heather Bowlin falls to 5-11 on the year. Bowlin scattered eight hits in 5.0 innings of work, while allowing four runs (two earned).
Utah stranded seven runners in the game, while New Mexico stranded nine. The Utes best chance to score came in the second when they had runners on second and third with one out. But the next two batters failed to bring in a run.
