SAN DIEGO--In an exciting and heartbreaking game, Utah fell to BYU 7-4 on Friday afternoon, meaning the Utes are eliminated from the Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Utes outhit the Cougars, 12-11, but left 11 runners on base.
BYU scored first in the game with a single in the first. The Cougars added another digit in the second with a bases loaded walk, to make it 2-0.
Utah tied the game in the top of the third, using an RBI single by Niki Hayhurst and a BYU error. But, the Cougars answered with three more in the latter of the inning. In the fourth, Texie Criddle notched a sac fly to score Traci Keller. Keller had singled earlier in the inning. The Cougars added a run in fourth and fifth innings to push it to a 7-3 margin.
The Utes refused to give up easily, staging a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Niki Hayhurst led off the inning with a triple off the right field fence. After watching two Ute outs, Hayhurst crossed the plate on a double by Lynsey Wall. Utah then continued the two-out rally by loading the bases with a single and a walk. But, that was the end of the run for the Utes.
BYU scored in every inning, but the sixth thanks to an awesome throw by Keller to get a Cougar out at the plate. Niki Andersen picks up the win for BYU. Brooke Boyce came on in relief to earn the save.
Jen Pursell (12-15) is credited with the loss for Utah after allowing seven runs in 6.0 innings. Pursell struck out four in the game.
Hayhurst, Wall, Keller and Jackie Wong all had two hits for Utah. Lauren Watson and Brooke Cadiente led the Cougars with three hits apiece.
